When seasons transition from one to another, there exists a magical window of time when nature is in a state of transformation. Known as the “in-between seasons.” Maybe an unpopular opinion but- this time offers a unique backdrop for capturing moments of love and connection. So I want to talk about why the “in-between seasons” are the perfect setting for engagement photos and provide tips for making the most of this uncharacteristically picturesque time.

Embracing Nature’s Palette

During the transition between seasons, nature undergoes a remarkable transformation. The subtle shifts in color, specifically from the bare branches of winter to the almost delicate blooms of spring, create a captivating backdrop for engagement photos.

The unique thing about this session (maybe not so unique for Minnesota) was that it was SO COLD! and also WINDY! Cold and brown usually are a photographers not so favorite things, but I honestly LOVE how these turned out. Sometimes as a photographer our job is to capture what is. And that’s exactly what I did. I played with the beautiful light and different textures and these turned out stunning.

Make sure to encourage your couples to embrace the unique color palette of the “in-between seasons” by choosing outfits that complement the natural surroundings. Specifically during this time you want to go with maybe earthy tones, or rich jewel colors that can enhance the overall aesthetic of the photos. It really creates a harmonious blend with the changing landscape.

Finding Hidden Gems

The “in-between seasons” offer a hidden beauty that may go unnoticed during the peak of summer or winter. Explore local parks, gardens, or scenic trails to discover hidden gems that come to life during this transitional phase.

We all have that park or area that we frequent with our fur babies, and this was that one for this couple. Kaitlin wanted to for sure do her engagements in Saint Cloud, MN and after brainstorming with her we came up with this location! I always want to do a location that is close to the couple, and for Kaitlin and Charlie it was this cute park. I honestly loved this idea, just a regular evening for these two and I was the casual third wheel. We walked and talked and just really got to know each other. It was so fun!

Seizing the Moment

Timing is key when planning an engagement photoshoot during the “in-between seasons.” Keep an eye on weather forecasts and schedule the session during a time when nature is at its most picturesque – despite it being in the middle of winter and spring. It’s already so cold and windy so try to not have it also raining. But you know- that would also be a really cute idea too! Just may be a little more wet afterwards. Haha!

With that being said, flexibility is essential, as weather conditions during the transition between seasons can be unpredictable. Encourage couples to embrace the spontaneity of the moment and be prepared to adapt to changing weather conditions for a truly authentic experience.

Capturing Intimate Moments

The “in-between seasons” provide a serene backdrop for capturing intimate moments between couples. Encourage them to focus on each other and let their love shine through amidst the beauty of nature. Having this approach with the session creates more authentic and candid photos instead of a super posey outcome.

So encourage natural interaction and genuine expressions, whether it’s stealing a kiss under a canopy of bare winter tree limbs or twirling hand in hand amidst a field. These candid moments of love and connection will be the heart of the engagement photos and make you squeal with delight at the finished product!

Taking engagement photos during the “in-between seasons” offers a unique opportunity to capture the beauty of transition and the magic of love in its purest form. By embracing nature’s palette, finding hidden gems, seizing the moment, and capturing intimate moments, couples can create timeless images that reflect the essence of their love story. My only hope is that these photos serve as a cherished reminder of the beauty of change and the promise of a lifetime of love and adventure ahead.
